If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to work as a Security Guard in Ontario, the following describes the process – it’s not quite as easy as you may have thought:
Ontario’s Private Security industry is regulated by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and this includes licensing all Security Guards before they can work. Companies that provide Security Guard services (known as agencies) also have to be licensed, as does any company that employs in-house security staff.
It must be noted ahead of the process that to apply for a Security Guard licence, an individual must be over 18 years of age, eligible to work in Canada and have a clean criminal record.
Take the Basic Training Course: This is a Ministry-mandated course offered by universities, community colleges, private career colleges, private security agencies and private companies that employ in-house security staff. Training providers must be registered and the Ministry maintains a list of training providers. The Ministry does not endorse any specific providers.
Courses can be classroom or web-based (though this must include some real-time interaction with an Instructor) and provided in accordance with the Training and Testing regulation of the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005.
The Security Guard Course length must be a minimum of 40 hours and include certification in Emergency Level First Aid. Course Fees are set by the training providers so they do vary, though around $300.00 seems to be the average cost. The basic training program aims to ensure that all Security Guards have the knowledge and skills to carry out their work professionally, effectively, safely and lawfully. The Basic Training Course covers the following topics:
- Introduction to the Security Industry
- The Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005 including Code of Conduct
- Basic Security Procedures
- Report Writing
- Health and Safety
- Emergency Response Preparation
- Canadian Legal System
- Legal Authorities
- Effective Communications
- Sensitivity Training
- Use of Force Theory
- Emergency Level First Aid Certification
Take the Test: Once the Basic Training Course has been successfully completed, the individual is provided with a Training Completion Number which is used to register for the Test. Tests are offered by Serco at select Drive Test Centres located across the Province. For information about locations and to register for a basic test, visit www.ontariosecuritytesting.ca.
The test comprises 60 multiple-choice questions based on the topics covered in the Basic Training Course and individuals are allowed 75 minutes to complete the test. The cost to take the Test is currently 66.50 plus HST, for a total of $75.15. If the individual fails the test, it can be taken as many times as necessary, but the full fee must be paid every time the test is taken. The pass rate is 62% and above. As of January this year, test results are available within two days of taking the test.
Apply for a Licence to Work: Once the Test has been passed, the individual may apply for a Security Guard licence – if they are over 18 years of age, eligible to work in Canada and have a clean criminal record. Applications can be made by mail or online, through ServiceOntario and the cost is $80.00.
Online applications are quicker: Status can be checked within two business days of application. Also, applicants will be able to access a printable digital licence as soon as their application is approved. The printed digital licence can be used as proof of licensing until a plastic licence card is received in the mail. Applicants must expect their application to take up to 30 days to be processed.
Once issued, the licence will expire two birthday dates after the day it is issued and must then be renewed every two years. Security Guards must carry a valid licence at all times while on duty, identify themselves and show the front of their licence to anyone who asks to see it. This includes employers, police and members of the public.
4D PROTECTION GUARDS: When we hire a Guard, we recognize that everyone learns at a different pace. We therefore don’t work with maximum or pre-set training hours. The basic training and experience of each Guard is complemented by extensive training specific to the Client`s site with heavy emphasis on orientation into the nature of client operations and the assimilation and execution of uniquely written Post Orders.
